North Georgia enduring gnat invasion late in year

A wet fall and above normal temperatures are bringing reports of a gnat infestation in north Georgia, well out of the tiny insects’ usual territory.

Horse trainer Crystal Matusevich says the gnats were getting into horses’ ears in October and November. WSB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/tsnWLS ) she says the gnats are causing infections among the animals and annoying riders.

Typically, gnats aren’t seen much above the so-called gnat line in middle Georgia.

Matusevich says the gnats were expected to depart by November, but warm spells have kept them around.

Veterinarian Ken Marcella says conditions have been ideal for gnats. He says some horses he’s seen have had to be tranquilized so the doctor could treat their skin
